NMEA 2000 temperature sensor, wet exhaust

In former posts I used the temperatur sensor DS18B20, in several applications, but now it was time for the boats exhaust temperature and checking out YDTC-13 from Yacht Devices(YDTC). (But please note that the YDTC can be used in any temperature application.)

When you are boating, using the engine, it's very important that the cooling water always is present otherwise major damages can follow. In "wet exhaust" systems it's easy to get the temperature which I posted here.

Mounting
In this post I'm using the YDTC with the same mounting as with the DS18B20 mentioned above. The old solution have worked for 4 years and the probe is not showing any wear and tear.

N2K pgn mapping
The YDTC is shipped sending NMEA 2000(N2K) pgn mapped to outside temperature, but can be programmed to send any of the 14 temperatures according to the picture. Unfortunately it can't show exhaust temp but I can live with that and have the actual temperature direct displayed on N2K MFD:s or displays like Garmin GMI 20.

If you are using Signal K you can use the "signalk-to-nmea2000" plugin to map it to other temperatures.

Programming
There are several ways to program the YDTC, check manual, and mapping it to another temperatur then the shipped. I'm using Yacht Devices CAN Log Viewer(CLV) and the YDWG as interface. The YDNU interface can also be used.

Access the YDWG and add "Server #2" according to picture

Install the CLV and open the application. Via "File => Open port" I added "tcp:ydwg:1457" and N2K pgn:s will show. "ydwgis the hostname which could exchanged to the IP adress.

Via "View => NMEA 2000 Devices" mark the YDTC device you are going to change and click on "Properties".

In the field "Description field 2" I added "YD:TYPE 5" and clicked on "Update". The device will respond with "YD:TYPE 5 DONE". The device is now reporting the temperature as type 5 => "Live Well Temperature"

Wrap up
Now you probably can set up alarms via your MFD, or display, and monitor the measured temperatur.
