Volvo Penta NMEA 2000 Gateway

Updated 2021-06-15

It's always nice to have ALL information at the same place, navigator/plotter, when You are out with the boat.

What could be missing is the engine information/data. If You have a Volvo Penta from 2006 or later it could be pretty easy.

There are some "standard" NMEA 2000 gateways to choose from, for example;
  • Volvo Penta has it's own 22813366, 3889758
  • Raymarine ECI-100
  • Maretron J2K100
  • .....
The Gateway
But there is one from Yacth Devices, YDEG-04(YD) which is OK priced, NMEA certified, having galvanic isolation between the interfaces and some additional features compared to the above mentioned.

Using YD:s gateway
  • You probably don't have to by additional cables
  • do Your own firmware upgrade
  • do Your own settings
  • log engine data to a SD card
In our boat we have two VP D6-310I-B, 2006, which is using the EVC-B2, (Electronic Vessel Control platform) so I just unplugged the Multilink cable, from one of the HCU:s, and connected the YDEG inline with the existing cable. But there was a little if.........

The "if"
This use case is probably very rare but it could be "nice to know".

Volvo Penta have two CAN-buses in their Deutsch connectors and the YDEG-04 is just connected to one, CAN1, check enclosed picture.

In our boat CAN2 was used, in the Multilink cable (connecting the 2 engines to each other). After, quick and good support from Yacht Devices, swapping pin 1 with pin 2 and pin 3 with pin 5, in both connectors on the YDEG, solved the problem.

Disassemble instructions for the Deutsch connectors are found here

Summing-up
So now the engine data is available in Openplotter(SignalK), OpenCPN, Garmin GMI 20 display and the plotter Raymarine classic E120 from 2006.
