If you need a security alarm you can use the router as such, posted here.
- When updating the firmware from "legacy" to "RUT2_R_00.07.xx.xx" I had some problems with the old, migrated, settings so ended up with a factory reset and did a new setup.
- To successfully upgrade RUT240 from Legacy firmware (RUT2XX_R_00.01.14.1 and below) to RUTOS (RUT2_R_00.07.01 and up), you must first upgrade to the latest Legacy firmware (RUT2XX_R_00.01.14.3 and up) and then upgrade to latest RUTOS firmware.
Setup
First startup
The TR first startup
is said to be done via WiFi but I really recommend to do this via the LAN
port. This is due to that when, in many cases, you save a setting on the
TR the WiFi restarts and you will for a moment loose connection. My Mac
was very quick to swap to my home WiFi which was a bit annoying.
Default settings
After the first start, or when restoring to default settings, the TR will
be found at a WiFi named something like "RUT240_xx" with an IP
of 192.168.1.1. But as said I would use the LAN cable.
Following the instructions, after you logged in(user/password => admin/admin01), the config wizard will start and guide you through the installation.
If you have another router with the same IP, 192.168.1.1, don't forget to change the TR:s IP avoiding conflicts.
Client Mode, bridge to public WiFi !!(Or your own phone)
Network => Wireless => SSIDs => Scan 2.4GHz Client Mode
Multiple Access Points (Nice feature importing a list)
Network => Wireless =>
Multiple AP
Different "Profiles", settings, for different use cases.(E.g, traveling
or on your boat)
System => Administration => Profiles
CLI or ssh
Using CLI(Command Line Interface) or remote ssh
System => CLI
you should use user "root" with same password as you use at the WEB GUI.
Check authority at "System => Administration => Access control"
Conclusion
All in all it's a very versatile product with reasonable price and if
you are a "hacker" there is a lot of functions to check.
Just check out the possible services(install with "Package Manager"), the SDK, and also the nice forum/suport where I got help.
Disadvantages
- The receiver/transmitter for the WiFi are shared. So for example a "scan" for a public WiFi will, for a short period, disconnect the connected WiFi clients. During "normal conditions", and for cable connected LAN devices, its "stable".
- The WiFi is just using 2.4 Ghz.
If these things are an obstacle please choose a router in the RUTX series, but then, its a different price tag.
Firmware
The setup is referring to a RT with firmware "RUT2_R_00.07.06"
Smart enclosure
If you want to avoid long antenna cables please check this enclosure instead. Powering the TR via the ethernet cable, passive POE, is done with, for example, this box.
Nice article, I am looking for something similar and particularly looking for a device that I can connect to the Marina wifi (Bridge mode) and then fail over to the Cell connection when the marina is out of range. When the marina is back in range it should reconnect.
