Teltonika router RUT 240 quick setup

Updated 2023-06-01 !

My old boat/travel WiFi router didn't behave so I was forced to look for a new one with these must functions;

    Built in SIM 4G/LTE capabilities
    WAN failover
    Powered with 12V DC
    Bridge public WiFi:s, or my phone, to LAN

I did a lot of Googling and ended up with Teletonika RUT 240(TR).....

This post will cover a setup summary for the RUT 240 model, but it's useable for other Teltonika models too since they have a common firmware.

                                Bridged Teltonika router as source for router or mesh network

Introduction
Using Apple devices, Raspberry Pi and open source it was nice to know that the TR is running Linux and the software base is OpenWrt

TR has been on the market some time and maybe don't have the fastest processer, almost 2 minutes for a reboot, but it is very stable with proven software and up and running it has a low CPU usage.

If you need a security alarm you can use the router as such, posted here.

Upgrade from "legacy"
Some tips
  • When updating the firmware from "legacy" to "RUT2_R_00.07.xx.xxI had some problems with the old, migrated, settings so ended up with a factory reset and did a new setup.
  • To successfully upgrade RUT240 from Legacy firmware (RUT2XX_R_00.01.14.1 and below) to RUTOS (RUT2_R_00.07.01 and up), you must first upgrade to the latest Legacy firmware (RUT2XX_R_00.01.14.3 and up) and then upgrade to latest RUTOS firmware.

Setup
First startup
The TR first startup is said to be done via WiFi but I really recommend to do this via the LAN port. This is due to that when, in many cases, you save a setting on the TR the WiFi restarts and you will for a moment loose connection. My Mac was very quick to swap to my home WiFi which was a bit annoying.

Default settings
After the first start, or when restoring to default settings, the TR will be found at a WiFi named something like "RUT240_xx" with an IP of 192.168.1.1. But as said I would use the LAN cable.

Following the instructions, after you logged in(user/password => admin/admin01), the config wizard will start and guide you through the installation.

If you have another router with the same IP, 192.168.1.1, don't forget to change the TR:s IP avoiding conflicts.

Shortcuts to some setups(and links to manual)
Please note that some of the described functions maybe not are visible in the GUI because you are in the defult "Basic" mode. Change to "Advanced" mode at top right.

Change TR:s IP, DHCP
Network => LAN => Edit =>
    Interfaces: LAN => General settings => IPv4 adress
    DHCP Server => General Setup => Enable DHCP

Wireless changes
    Network => Wireless => Radio
        Country code
        => WiFi 2.4GHz Settings => General setup => Country code

Client Mode, bridge to public WiFi !!(Or your own phone)
    Network => Wireless => SSIDs => Scan 2.4GHz Client Mode

Multiple Access Points (Nice feature importing a list)
    Network => Wireless => Multiple AP

Different "Profiles", settings, for different use cases.(E.g, traveling or on your boat)
    System => Administration => Profiles

WAN port as LAN
If you don't use the physical WAN port you can change it to an additional LAN port.

Reset
Reset and factory reset are described here.

CLI or ssh
Using CLI(Command Line Interface) or remote ssh
        System => CLI
you should use user "root" with same password as you use at the WEB GUI.
Check authority at "System => Administration => Access control"

Conclusion
All in all it's a very versatile product with reasonable price and if you are a "hacker" there is a lot of functions to check.

Just check out the possible services(install with "Package Manager"), the SDK, and also the nice forum/suport where I got help.

Disadvantages

  • The receiver/transmitter for the WiFi are shared. So for example a "scan" for a public WiFi will, for a short period, disconnect the connected WiFi clients. During "normal conditions", and for cable connected LAN devices, its "stable".
  • The WiFi is just using 2.4 Ghz.

If these things are an obstacle please choose a router in the RUTX series, but then, its a different price tag.

Firmware
The setup is referring to a RT with firmware "
RUT2_R_00.07.06"

Smart enclosure
If you want to avoid long antenna cables please check this enclosure instead. Powering the TR via the ethernet cable, passive POE, is done with, for example, this box.

  1. Nice article, I am looking for something similar and particularly looking for a device that I can connect to the Marina wifi (Bridge mode) and then fail over to the Cell connection when the marina is out of range. When the marina is back in range it should reconnect.

    Thanks
